California Truck Insurance Requirements

California state law requires local truck drivers and new ventures to maintain a minimum amount of Liability insurance. How much you need depends on the type of freight you haul and where you haul it. If you don’t cross state lines and your truck is over 10,000 GVW, you must get a CA Intrastate ID Number and be insured up to the following levels:

$1,000,000

Liability Insurance (Oil Transport)

$5,000,000

Liability Insurance (Hazmat)

$300,000

Liability Insurance (Household Goods)

$750,000

Liability Insurance (General Freight)

$20,000

Vehicle and $20,000/Catastrophe | Cargo Insurance (Intrastate household goods movers and interstate contract carriers)

The insurance requirements for truck drivers who drive through multiple states are more thorough. You must meet the above as well as the semi-truck insurance requirements laid out by the FMCSA. Typical federal Liability limits are $750,000 or $1,000,000.

Both California and the USDOT require certain filings to be submitted by your insurance agent. Your insurance agent or insurance company should handle these filings for you. These forms show the government that all your DOT truck insurance requirements are fulfilled, and must be submitted before you can receive your authority. Some common forms include:

Form MCS-90

MCP-65

Form H

The BMC-91

Stuggart Insurance Solutions will provide you with the Liability limits as required and file the necessary state and DOT forms.
